The hardest thing to do

...and a new From 0 to 100M podcast episode!

Do you know what the hardest thing to do is in the early days of building a company?

Saying no. This is also one of the most underrated skills one can develop as a founder. It’s not something anyone warns you about, and even now, after many years of entrepreneurship, I still find it hard to do.

Everyone talks about hustle, about saying yes, about being scrappy and taking the meeting. But the thing that almost broke me in year one wasn't the work, it was to protect my time and actually get to say no.

In April alone I said no to a podcast invite that didn’t reach my audience, to a partnership that looked good on paper but wouldn’t have brought us real returns, a “quick coffee” with someone who didn’t have a clear ask, and a prospect who tried to negotiate me down 40%.

Saying NO to customers, partners, media opportunities, and investors who don’t get it, all of these feel like leaving money or momentum on the table. They are uncomfortable but they are the right thing to do.

Every NO you say is a YES to something else, something you should actually be doing. Your company, in the early days, is shaped by what you say no to.

If you can't say no, you don't have a strategy. You have a calendar full of other people's priorities.

🎧 New podcast episode!

A new episode of the From 0 to 100M podcast is up and this time I'm interviewing James O'Donnell, Co-founder & COO at Duet.

We unpack what it takes to build in a fragmented industry across 25+ states, from early challenges in finding providers to the lessons learned by working side-by-side with dispatchers and staying deeply connected to day-to-day operations.

The conversation covers the story behind the product, the realities of scaling, and the importance of honesty, trust, and delivering on promises in client relationships.

We also explore how Duet is approaching AI, navigating fundraising, and making tough business decisions while staying focused on meaningful metrics and long-term impact.
